2024-2025

Siobhan L. Webster, Mathematics Coach

The Math Program at Houston Academy for Grades Pre-Kindergarten to 8 follows the East Orange School District Model which consists of an 80-minute block, 5 days a week.  Our goal is to engage students in fun, exciting and efficient problem solving and modeling to develop skills necessary for students to compete in this technological and dynamic world. With the rapid technological advances taking place today, students will have the core knowledge and skills that are necessary to excel in college and career.

Through use of HMH curriculum Into Math, Reveal Math & IReady, students have the chance to struggle with meaningful problems, discuss possible solutions with their peers, create mathematical arguments, and place these arguments before a group of their peers who can provide validation and feedback. Math instruction is allows students to demonstrate their ability to:

  1. Attend to problems and persevere in solving them.
  2. Reason abstractly and quantitatively.
  3. Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others
  4. Model with mathematics.
  5. Use appropriate tools strategically.
  6. Attend to precision.
  7. Look for and make use of structure.
  8. Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning.

Math teachers use data to drive instruction through small group differentiation, remediation, intervention and enrichment. Various instructional strategies are used to increase student engagement, assessment and student-centered instruction.
